  • MAGNET SPELLING BEE! CALLING ALL SPELLING ENTHUSIASTS...the Magnet Spelling Bee will be taking place this Thursday, February 11th at 3:15pm in the MPR.  Please sign up in the Magnet Office and pick of a list of words to study.  The winner of the local magnet school spelling bee will compete against other schools at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee at Walter Reed Middle School on Sunday, March 13th.   • Portola Magnet T-Shirts ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS (and teachers): The Portola Magnet T-shirts and sweatshirts will be delivered by Wednesday, February 10th.  If you did not have an opportunity to purchase a shirt, you can simply print the form attached to this article, and send this with your child to any Magnet Student Council Member (Emily, Paula, Joyce, Timothy or Niko), to Mrs. Perry, or to the Magnet Office along with the money or check. Please make all checks payable to Portola MPA, and please write Magnet Student Council in the memo box.   • Holiday Colors Spirit Day Winner! ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS (and teachers): As most of you know, we recently had our holiday color spirit day (as it says in the title). All the home rooms had excellent participation rates, and some home rooms even had over 100%! But, unfortunately, as like all contests, there can only be one winner. That winner is (drum roll, please. Thank you.)... MR. STEVENSON'S home room! Congratulations to all the students in Mr. Stevenson's home room (and Mr. Stevenson. We couldn't forget him, could we?   • Holiday Colors Spirit Day- December 11, 2015 ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS (and teachers)! This Friday, December 11th, Magnet Student Council is going to be having another spirit day! This weeks theme- holiday colors! When we say holiday colors, we mean red, white, green, and blue colors. And it has to be something you can wear. Meaning, no red lunchboxes, no green sticky notes, no papers taped to yourself reading, "Blue." None of that. It has to be something you can wear on your body, like a shirt, pants, socks, and shoes.   • 2015 Portola HGM Science Fair Science Fair ResultsOur 2nd Magnet Science Fair was so much fun. On Day 1, 7th and 8th graders discussed their projects with scientists, engineers and educators.  Most had conversations with 3-4 judges.  On Day 2, students shared their projects with 1000 other students and faculty, who voted for People's Choice Awards.List of All Student Projects  Top Projects OverallJudges' Special Awards  People's Choice Awards  Huge Thanks to  Mrs. Shah and Mr. OkimuraScience Fair Judges  Organizers and Volunteers  Ms. Perry, Ms. Magrelli, Ms. GarciaAward-winning projects will be displayed in science classrooms at Open House on March 19.

Portola Highly Gifted Magnet
The Portola Highly Gifted Magnet is the only middle-school program in the Los Angeles Unified School District exclusively dedicated to the education of highly gifted students, and one of the few programs across the United States, public or private, to do so.  Students enrolled in the Portola Highly Gifted Magnet benefit from an accelerated academic curriculum taught in a nurturing environment.  In addition to core classes, Portola HGM students learn about the world around them through enrichment trips, extra-curricular activities and through its diverse student population.
