The Portola Highly Gifted Magnet Parents Association (MPA) was founded by magnet families to support the program with both monetary donations and volunteer assistance. Portola’s magnet is the only middle school program in the Los Angeles Unified School District exclusively dedicated to the education of highly gifted students, and one of the few programs across the United States, public or private, to do so. All families with children enrolled in the program are automatically members. 

The MPA’s Annual Fund drive provides crucial financial support for basic classroom supplies and services, such as lab equipment for the science program, updates to the History video library, and replenishing books sets for the English classes. It also enables the program to offer academic enhancements both inside and outside the classroom in all subject areas, as well as assisting the administration to defray expenses in major purchases so that the staff may focus more effectively on the students. 

The MPA’s volunteer committees assist the program in a variety of ways. Parents have been instrumental in driving the development of a full enrichment trip program for all grades, enabling the students to experience multi-day, off-site excursions offering educational, leadership and personal growth opportunities. We have established monthly fundraising, community-building lunches for magnet students and teachers. Parents help coach the Math Counts team and judge Science Fair projects, and work with the administration to create a memorable graduation experience for our eighth graders. 

As the MPA heads into a new stage of increased activity and significance, we are working to develop additional programs, including grant-writing, joint activities with the magnet’s student council, and possible additions to the magnet’s extra-curricular offerings.
