Common Core Math, Q&A at MPA Meeting

For those who missed Dr. McClay's Common Core Math meeting, please see her informative slide presentation.  We will have a 15-minute Question and Answer period at MPA Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 PM.  There will not be enough time to repeat the presentation, so please read slides and Summary below before asking questions.

A parent's summary of Main Points:

1)  National Common Core standards are much more rigorous than the previous California standards.

2)  In addition to the regular "pathway" (speed at which students take the Common Core courses), there are two very challenging accelerated pathways - one covers 4 years of CC math in 3 years, and one covers 5 years in 3 years. The accelerated pathways are very demanding and not to be taken lightly.  Anyone who takes the most accelerated path should really, really like math, because they are setting themselves on a tough course all the way through their high school years.

3) Which path students take will depend on testing, work habits, teacher recommendation, and grades.  There is no shame in slowing down a bit to ensure your child thoroughly masters the concepts.

4) Summary of LAUSD pathways (Note: the course titles and pacing have changed since the April Common Core presentation)
