Curriculum

As a program for highly gifted students, all core academic classes are taught at an elevated level.  Portola Highly Gifted Magnet differentiates the standard curriculum by utilizing strategies such as acceleration, depth, and complexity in order to access higher level thinking skills.  The goal is to provide students in the magnet with a balanced program of the "core content" with expectations to exceed the standards and expose students to a gifted educational experience.  We also offer a rich elective experience for our students with an emphasis on the performing and visual arts.  The curriculum is as follows:
 
6th Grade
  • Math 6 + Pre-Algebra (2 years in 1), Algebra 1*, or Geometry*
  • English 6
  • Science 6 - Earth Sciences
  • Ancient World History 6
  • Physical Education
  • Elective. Options include: instrumental music; choir; drama; art; computers; creative writing
7th Grade 
  • Algebra 1, Geometry*, or Algebra 2*
  • English 7
  • Science 7 - Life Science/Health
  • World History 7

8th Grade
  • Geometry, Honors Algebra 2*, or Pre-Calculus*
