Portola’s Highly Gifted Magnet Center offers highly gifted students in grades 6-8 an academically challenging curriculum designed to address their special needs.  Students in the HGM come from widely diverse cultural, economic and geographic backgrounds but all share the need for more rigorous education. Any student who meets the criterion of 99.5% or above on an IQ administered by a LAUSD Psychologist is eligible to apply, more details here

The Magnet program, a “school within a school,” focuses on accelerated, in-depth course work.  Clustering highly gifted students together also provides peers who can understand and challenge each other, and foster a culture of intellectual curiosity and academic excellence.  An experienced teaching staff, smaller class sizes, and outside enrichment programs contribute to creating a dynamic, rigorous educational environment.  Daily physical education classes, as well as a variety of arts and other electives, are provided in conjunction with the resident school.  Magnet students particate in high numbers in Portola’s award-winning choir, orchestra and drama programs, which offer concerts and performances throughout the year.

Extra-curricular options include academic competitions in which our teams often shine, such as Math Counts, LA County Science Fair, Battle of the Books, Spelling Bee, and Geography Bee.  We have a variety of Magnet-only after-school classes such as Model United Nations, debate, robotics and computer programming (near campus).  Free after-school childcare is available by enrollment through Youth Services, and can include homework time, sports teams and enrichment activities.
